IVF                       IVF                      IVF

The IVF or “test tube baby” as it is known, consists of the eggs removal from the ovaries follicles, and fertilization of them in lab with the male partner sperm.

The embryos resultant of the eggs fertilization will be transferred after some days to the maternal uterus.  The first human IVF happened in 1978 with the birth of Louise Brown in England.  It is known that IVF was developed initially to treat women that have fallopian tubes obstruction (the place where the eggs fertilization usually happened), but today IVF is used to solve other problems that may cause infertility, such as:

  • Tube – peritoneal factor (obstructed tubes and internal adherence)
  • Artificial insemination failure after four attempts
  • Infertility persists after tubal surgery
  • Infertility problems from a long period of time (over three years under common treatment).
  • Sterile couples without an apparent cause
  • LUF syndrome (no ovulation)
  • Early menopause and physiologic (eggs donation)
  • Birth defects or uterus absence (surrogate mother)
  • Endometrioses at any degree, after three attempts with Intra-uterine insemination
  • Problems with sperm quality or/and quantity.

In a IVF procedure the woman takes medicines in order to her ovaries develop a high number of follicles and to get a reasonable number of ovules, increasing by that the couple chance of have a succeed treatment.  The ovaries stimulation process last about 10 to 12 days, and it is necessary that the patient return to the HRCL (Human Reproduction Center of Londrina) three to four times to do the monitoring of the ovaries stimulation.   In the day of the ovules collection the woman is submitted to a follicles puncture, under light anesthesia, by an ultra-sound guided needle aspiration.  In the same day her partner will collect the sperm through masturbation or using the frozen sperm. Each ovule will receive 100 thousand spermatozoids to be fertilized in a lab.  The eggs fertilization can be known after 24 hours with the identification of pro-nucleus in the egg cytoplasm that will start divide into blastomeres consisting of the human embryo.  After 2 to 3 divisions the embryos are transferred to the patient uterus (this is done using a special catheter, without the need of anesthesia, like if it was a common gynecologic exam).

The ovaries stimulation last about 10 to 12 days.  The pregnancy test is done usually 14 days after the embryos transference.
